China will not impose on Japan's development space, and it has been brought, and always will bring, benefits to its neighbors, said a former senior Chinese diplomat.

Tang Jiaxuan, former Chinese foreign minister and now president of the China-Japan Friendship Association, made the remark during his keynote speech on Beijing-Tokyo Forum which opened on Sept. 27.

He hoped that the two countries could work together. During the G20 Hangzhou summit earlier this month, China's President Xi Jinping stressed that the four political documents are the bedrock of Sino-Japan bilateral relations and that the four-point agreement to improve bilateral ties is essential to improving their relationships.

Tang suggested that the two sides should abide by the principles and by consensus in order to solve old problems and avoid new problems.

While acknowledging that the two countries are neighbors and can draw merits from each other's development, Tang reassured that China will not seek hegemony and hoped that the two neighbors can foster cooperation and common development in areas like energy saving, environmental protection, climate change and counter-terrorism.

He also called for closer people-to-people exchanges in order to lay a solid foundation for improved Sino-Japanese relations.
