A senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Friday called on China and Japan to learn from the past, increase trust and continue to improve ties.

Huang Kunming, head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks while meeting with former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda.

Fukuda is in Beijing to attend the 13th Beijing-Tokyo Forum, slated for the weekend.

Huang called on both sides to implement the consensus reached by state leaders on the sidelines of the 25th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Economic Leaders' Meeting in Vietnam's Da Nang.

He called for the Beijing-Tokyo Forum to be fully used to offer advice on improving bilateral relations.

Fukuda vowed to work with China to boost closer exchange.

The Beijing-Tokyo Forum was launched by China Daily and non-profit Japanese organization Genron NPO in 2005.

The forum, held alternately in Beijing and Tokyo, aims to improve the bilateral relationship and deepen understanding between China and Japan.
